The paper also looks at the history of the Indian services sector since 1991 when the Indian economy embarked on a path of liberalization, privatization and globalization. It covers the growth of services sector and how the sector has made India the backbone of modern economy and propelled India's integration with the global economy. The study also explores the role of services in the process of poverty reduction, women empowerment, financial inclusion, skill development, urbanization and realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The sector enjoys tremendous success but has many difficulties such as the lack of formal jobs, inequality at regional level, lack of skills, digital divide, environmental problems, infrastructure gap, and exposure to international economic cycles. The paper highlights the need for policy measures to promote inclusive and environmentally sustainable growth of the service sector. The Government initiatives like Startup India, Skill India, Smart Cities Mission, Digital India and financial inclusion initiatives are also studied in terms of sustainability.

The study findings suggest that services sector is the most dynamic sector of the economy as well as a key determinant for sustainable development in the Indian context. Incorporating the right policy measures, innovation, investment in human resources and environmental protection measures, the services sector can continue to play a significant role in the long-term prosperity and social transformation of India.
