Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of bank mergers in India on the financial performance of the acquiring banks. In light of the evolving financial landscape and the increasing trend of consolidation within the banking sector, this research examines a selection of bank mergers that have occurred in India over the last two decades, exploring their implications for the financial metrics of the acquirer banks. The methodology employed involves a quantitative examination of key financial indicators, such as return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), net interest margin (NIM), and overall profitability, before and after the merger events. A comprehensive dataset, encompassing both pre-merger and post-merger financial performance data, allows for a robust analysis of trends and variations attributable to the mergers. The research applies various statistical techniques including, but not limited to, paired sample t-tests and regression analysis, to assess the significance of observed changes in financial performance indicators. Results indicate a mixed response in financial performance metrics post-merger; while some acquirer banks demonstrate marked improvements in profitability and operational efficiency, others exhibit stagnant or declining performance metrics. Specifically, it was found that mergers involving larger and more established banks tend to yield more favorable financial outcomes compared to those involving smaller entities. Furthermore, the analysis underscores the importance of strategic fit, managerial integration, and cultural alignment in determining the success of mergers and, by extension, the financial performance of acquiring banks. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on bank consolidation in India, providing policymakers and financial practitioners with empirical insights into the complexities of bank mergers and their consequential impact on institutional performance. By contextualizing these results against the backdrop of regulatory frameworks and market dynamics, this study elucidates the multifaceted nature of bank mergers and emphasizes the need for targeted strategies to optimize financial outcomes post-merger.
