Abstract

The swift expansion of residential rooftop solar PV systems has paved new avenues for sustainable development while simultaneously raising concerns regarding solar rebound effects whereby prosumers raise their electricity consumption after installing solar panels and partially offsets the projected environmental benefits. Battery Enabled Storage Systems (BESS) have emerged as a potential solution in this regard by enhancing self-consumption, reducing grid dependence and boosting energy management. However, their influence on solar rebound effect has received limited research attention. This study examines the dual role of BESS in either mitigating or amplifying the solar rebound effect and its broader implications on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7, 12 and 13. The review indicates that outcomes of BESS emerge from the interplay of technological, behavioral and environmental aspects rather than by technical performance alone. Additionally, strengthening the contribution of BESS to SDGs involves adopting a holistic approach encompassing technological advancement with consumer awareness, responsible consumption and circular economy practices.
